Our Origin Story

For as long as we can remember, we’ve been obsessed with one thing: the conversations that actually matter.

Not the weather. Not who’s picking up the kids. Not the kind of conversation that fills silence without saying anything.

The real ones.

The kind that happen at 2am when nobody planned to stay up that late. The kind that change how you see someone, or how you see yourself. The kind where you find out something about a person you’ve known for years that makes you think: how did I not know this about you?

Those conversations. We’ve been chasing them our whole lives.

Tina Smith, Founder and Creator of Pick One

“The right question at the right moment changes everything.”

Tina Smith, Founder

Because every time something felt off between us, every time we felt disconnected, every time the arguments came more than the laughter, it always came back to the same thing.

We were fighting about things we’d never properly discussed.

Starting a Business Together

We started a business together and never asked each other the questions that actually mattered.

Building a House Together

We built a house together and assumed we’d figure it out as we went. The excitement was big, the assumptions were bigger. We expected the right support from each other but never asked what that actually meant to each of us, and then felt frustrated when we didn’t get what we needed.

Road Trips with Our Kids

And with our kids, we’d pile into the car for a road trip full of excitement and possibility, and by kilometre 100 everyone had their earphones in. Music. Podcasts. Their own world. And we didn’t know how to bring the conversation back.

We kept arriving at the same place: Not enough of the right conversations. Too many of the wrong assumptions.

That’s when everything changed.

We turned our obsession into a study.

  • We explored every book, study, and psychology paper we could find about human connection, communication, and what actually makes people open up to each other.

  • We wanted to understand the exact mechanics behind why some conversations change everything, and others change nothing.

  • We started with conversation card games. Brought them everywhere. They sparked something real.

We wanted more so we started writing our own questions.

Why Games Beat Therapy Prompts

When you ask a direct, heavy question, the brain enters threat assessment. When a game introduces the prompt, curiosity takes over. Play creates the safety that honesty requires.

You ask

“We need to talk.”

Defenses

It implies something is broken. One person interrogates, the other defends. Partners dread starting; teens answer with eye rolls and “Fine.”

The game asks

“What’s something you need from me that you rarely ask for?”

Curiosity

“The card asked, not me.” Both people draw and answer in turns. Laughter disarms before the deep questions arrive.

Money

About money: the conversations couples avoid until they’re sitting across from each other in a lawyer’s office.

Intimacy

About intimacy: the things people spend years wanting to say but never find a safe way into.

Business

About starting a business together: the questions nobody asks before the excitement takes over and the assumptions start piling up.

Life decisions

About having kids, buying a house, changing careers, moving abroad: every decision that changes everything and deserves more than a gut feeling.

  • Fun & Laughs

We also wrote the ones that make people laugh so hard they cry.

  • Relationships

The ones that reveal something unexpected about someone you’ve known for years.

  • Family

The ones that make a teenager look up from their phone and actually answer.

Every topic. Every relationship. Every occasion.

We wrote until we had three thousand questions.

And we still haven’t stopped.

Fun & Laughs

What always makes you feel better?

We wanted to take the questions with us everywhere.

Creating another deck of cards with all those 3,000+ questions wasn’t an option. So we built a simple app.

Just for us. Just for our family.

Then we gave it to our friends.

They started to notice how their relationships were changing for the better, not just between them but with their kids too.

And their friends wanted it. And friends of their friends too.

That’s when we knew: this wasn’t just our story.

So Now We Are Sharing Pick One with Everyone

3,000 questions for couples, families, friends, first dates, and every conversation that matters.

The Pick One app on four phones: My Lists to create your own deck, My Diary to save every answer, the Spin the wheel screen, and My Games with every Pick One game.
  • Everything we always wanted: and never could find anywhere else.
  • Built by a couple who needed it.
  • Now in the hands of everyone who does.

The quality of your conversations determines the quality of your relationships.

And the quality of your relationships determines the quality of your life.

We believe that with everything we have.
It’s why we spent years chasing the right questions. It’s why we built Pick One.

Put the phone down. Pick One. And see what happens when you actually ask.

Built by people who believe real conversation changes everything.
